Don't Miss the “Golden Window” for Orthodontic Treatment
During this summer break, the Department of Stomatology at HeYou Hospital has also entered a peak period for adolescent (pediatric) orthodontic consultations.
What issues should parents understand before taking their child for orthodontic treatment? How can they self-assess? What unique advantages does summer treatment offer? Today, we have specially invited Dr. Wang Liuyi from the Department of Stomatology to provide an in-depth explanation of adolescent (pediatric) orthodontics.

Orthodontic treatment involves using various appliances
to treat different types of dentofacial deformities,
restoring them to a normal dental occlusion relationship.
01
Optimal Age for Orthodontic Treatment
The presentation of teeth varies at different ages, and the timing for orthodontic treatment also differs.
Generally speaking, ages 8 to 20 are considered the golden period for orthodontic treatment (subject to physician's recommendation). During this age range, adolescents (children) undergo rapid development, leading to relatively better treatment outcomes.
However, when skeletal issues such as underbites or protruding teeth appear, early intervention is necessary. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that children have an orthodontic evaluation by around age 7.

What Types of Teeth Require Orthodontic Treatment?
How Can Parents Self-Assess?

After completing the above 4 self-assessments, you can better determine if your child needs orthodontic treatment. It is also recommended to bring your child for an outpatient examination, where a professional orthodontist can evaluate whether the child's teeth and jaw development are normal and whether intervention is necessary.
03
How Long Does the Treatment Cycle Take?
The duration of orthodontic treatment varies depending on the individual's dental condition and the treatment plan chosen.
Generally, the active treatment phase lasts from 1 to 3 years, followed by a retention phase. The specific duration needs to be determined by the orthodontist based on the patient's specific situation.
