The Spring Festival is a time for family reunions, where people enjoy the happiness of gathering with their loved ones. However, a group of medical workers silently remain at their posts, sacrificing time with their families, and safeguarding the health of the people with their dedication. For them, “I am on duty during the Spring Festival, health never stops” is not just a commitment, but a responsibility.




During the Spring Festival duty days at the Medical Laboratory Center of HeYou Hospital, which includes the Clinical Laboratory Department and the Blood Transfusion Department, although there was less time to be with family and no chance to visit relatives and friends or raise a toast in celebration, we felt another kind of warmth and strength in this small world. Colleagues supported each other and worked in默契配合, like a close-knit family. Together, we welcomed the New Year’s bell amidst the busyness, interpreting responsibility and dedication with our steadfast presence.

Clinical Laboratory Department: The “Scouts” of the Hospital

During the Spring Festival, to provide accurate test reports to the clinical departments in a timely manner, the laboratory technicians remained at their posts, using precise data to provide strong support for doctors’ diagnosis and treatment. The Clinical Laboratory Department is the “scout” of the hospital. Every adjustment of the instruments, every step of the testing operation, and every verification of the data must be done with the utmost care. Each report issued could affect the patient’s diagnosis and treatment, and is crucial to the patient’s health and recovery.


Blood Transfusion Department: The “Support Troops” of the Hospital

The treatment of many patients relies on the silent dedication and contribution of the Blood Transfusion Department. They are the unsung heroes behind the frontline clinical doctors. Many disease treatments and surgical procedures are inseparable from clinical blood transfusion, especially for patients with critical illnesses, major surgeries, trauma, and massive blood loss, who must receive timely blood component supplementation to save their lives. Especially during major holidays, the Blood Transfusion Department is also one of the most urgent and busiest departments in the hospital.




New Year’s Eve: Emergency Plasma Exchange


On New Year’s Eve, an ICU patient with liver failure showed an upward trend in total bilirubin. According to the patient’s condition, emergency plasma exchange treatment was required. To ensure the procedure went smoothly, the doctor repeatedly confirmed the blood bank inventory. A colleague who lives in Guangzhou insisted on staying to assist the ICU medical team in completing the plasma exchange before leaving work to go home.










First Day of the New Year: Neonatal Hemolysis Test


On the night of the first day of the New Year, a patient in the NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit), whose mother had blood type O, raised concerns about the risk of neonatal hemolysis. The doctor wanted to know the results of the neonatal hemolysis three tests as soon as possible. Additionally, the family was eager to be discharged. To meet the needs of both the patient and the doctor, a laboratory colleague immediately reported for duty in the early hours of the morning and issued the report in a timely manner.



Second Day of the New Year: Emergency Blood Transfusion Rescue


On the night of the second day of the New Year, a cancer patient’s condition changed. The red blood cell count was 1.42*10^12/L, hemoglobin was 47g/L, and platelets were 12*10^9/L, indicating a very critical situation. An urgent transfusion of A-type washed red blood cells and A-type platelets was needed. However, washed red blood cells and platelets usually require advance reservation. Director He of the Medical Laboratory Center immediately contacted and communicated multiple times with the blood bank director, ultimately successfully obtaining the only unit of A-type platelets available at the blood bank. Simultaneously, with the efficient cooperation of the hospital’s transport team, the blood bag was issued within one hour, staging a thrilling rescue operation.




Third Day of the New Year: Testing for a Patient with Severe Lipemia


At around 6 a.m. on the third day of the New Year, an emergency patient with severe lipemia arrived. Severe lipemia causes falsely elevated results for hemoglobin (HGB), mean corpuscular hemoglobin (MCH), and mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC), and can interfere with coagulation tests, leading to abnormal results. It also significantly impacts biochemical indicators such as total protein (TP), albumin (ALB), total bilirubin (TBIL), direct bilirubin (DBIL), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), blood glucose (GLU), uric acid (UA), triglycerides (TG), and amylase (AMY). After multiple plasma exchanges of the lipemic specimen, an accurate report was finally issued around 8 a.m.

This experience of being on duty during the Spring Festival has given us a deeper understanding of the value of our work. In this seemingly ordinary yet extremely important position, we silently dedicate ourselves to safeguarding people’s health and contributing to the peace of the New Year. We also put into practice the motto of HeYou Hospital —— “Uprightness and Sincerity, Guarding Life.” With love and responsibility, we protect this big family of the Medical Laboratory Center.
