Against the backdrop of an aging society, how to help the elderly avoid the risk of falls and master scientific first-aid knowledge has become a shared concern for families and society. On the morning of April 18, Professor Zhang Ying, Director of the Third Department of Orthopedics at HeYou Hospital, visited the Shunde District Senior Cadre University. With the theme "Safety Fall Prevention Measures and Management for the Elderly," he delivered a practical health education lecture to nearly 100 elderly students and their families, helping to strengthen the safety防线 for seniors.

Scientific Analysis of Fall Risk, Multi-Dimensional Fortification of Defenses

Director Zhang Ying began by introducing the definition and classification of falls, emphasizing that a fall is not merely an "unintentional contact with the ground" but is also related to multiple factors such as disease, medication, and physiological function. Citing the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-10), he pointed out that falls in the elderly are mostly categorized as "fall from one level to another" and "fall on same level." He noted that 75% of individuals over 65 have a history of falls, which can range from minor soft tissue injuries to severe fractures, cerebral hemorrhage, and even life-threatening conditions.

Fracture Treatment and First Aid: Time is Life

Addressing common post-fall issues such as femoral neck fractures and distal radius fractures, Director Zhang Ying emphasized: "Unless physical conditions contraindicate, early surgical intervention should be pursued, combining minimally invasive techniques with individualized rehabilitation plans to maximize functional recovery." He explained advanced treatments like hip replacement and bone lengthening through clinical cases, and on-site, he detailed the four-step elderly first-aid method: Assess Consciousness, Control Bleeding, Immobilize Fracture, Emergency Transport.

HeYou Expert Team Face-to-Face Q&A

After the lecture, the HeYou Hospital Trauma Orthopedics team — Director Zhang Ying, Dr. Chen Zhibiao, and Dr. Wang Zhenhu — provided face-to-face health consultations for the elderly students. 72-year-old Uncle Chen, who had previously suffered a wrist fracture from a fall, expressed concerns about knee pain affecting his exercise. Dr. Chen Zhibiao recommended low-impact activities such as swimming and seated leg raises to strengthen lower limb strength while protecting the joints. Director Zhang Ying reviewed bone density reports for several attendees, offering individualized nutritional supplementation and exercise advice. He called for collaborative attention from families and society to elderly safety, emphasizing that "fall prevention is a systematic project requiring attention to detail to build a strong defense."

In his concluding remarks, Director Zhang Ying stated: "Protecting the health and safety of the elderly begins with every steady step. May every family build a safe haven against falls, allowing the silver years to move forward with ease."

HeYou Hospital is committed to providing high-quality medical services. This public lecture is another initiative by the hospital to give back to the community and care for the health of the elderly. Moving forward, HeYou Hospital's "HeYou Famous Doctor Public Lecture" series will continue to offer citizens health education from various departments and on different topics, looking forward to embarking on a new chapter of health together with the public.
