Providing citizens with high-standard, inclusive medical resources is one of the goals of achieving “Happy Foshan.” In Beijiao Town, Shunde District, Foshan City, the HeYou International Hospital Project (hereinafter referred to as “HeYou Hospital”), funded and established by Midea Holding and included in the “Guangdong Province 2021 Key Construction Official Project Plan,” has been accelerating construction since its groundbreaking on November 13, 2020, in accordance with the highest standards of domestic tertiary Grade A general hospitals and international quality certification systems. It is expected to be operational by mid-2024.

HeYou Hospital is positioned as a non-profit hospital. All future operating surpluses will be used for the hospital's own development, medical research, and social welfare. The hospital has planned to negotiate with government departments to integrate outpatient and inpatient services into the social security system, allowing residents of Foshan and the Greater Bay Area to share high-level medical services.

Hospital Operation Adopts the Concept of “Energy-Saving Technology + Health Medicine”

By the end of June 2021, HeYou Hospital will begin piling for the main structure, just over half a year after the hospital's groundbreaking ceremony.

According to the plan, the total investment for the HeYou Hospital project is 10 billion RMB, covering an area of 186 mu, with a main building area of 380,000 square meters, planning 1,500 beds, and a green rate of up to 30%. The first phase, already under construction, includes three major sections: the Medical Complex Building, the Administrative Office Building, and the IMC International Medical Center, with a total building area of approximately 286,000 square meters. The second phase of the project reserves functional areas such as the Inpatient Area, Translational Medicine Center, Academic Exchange Center, and Particle Center.

Notably, HeYou Hospital is designed to international first-class standards, aiming to create a green and environmentally friendly urban garden hospital.

On one hand, the hospital's design highlights the importance of humanistic care and customer experience, creating a healing internal spatial experience. The hospital's main buildings run north-south, effectively utilizing natural lighting and ventilation. Through landscape nodes such as enclosed courtyards, sky gardens, and art corridors, sunlight, air, and greenery are introduced into the hospital's internal space, transforming it into an urban garden landscape, effectively reducing stress for patients and medical staff.

On the other hand, the hospital is committed to building a green and energy-efficient hospital at an internationally advanced level. “We have installed low-transmittance, low-heat-transfer-coefficient insulating glass combined with adjustable tensioned membrane and rooftop light sensors to ensure effective natural indoor lighting while maintaining a comfortable temperature; a building automation system controls the appropriate window opening rate to achieve natural ventilation through the chimney effect, creating an indoor microclimate; the building facade adopts an integrated photovoltaic/solar and curtain wall model to maintain constant temperature and humidity throughout the year,” introduced a relevant person in charge of the HeYou Hospital operations team regarding the hospital's hardware facility standards.

Additionally, high-level infectious disease prevention and nosocomial infection management are top priorities for the preparatory team: HeYou Hospital's Infectious Disease Department strictly adheres to the “Three Zones, Two Passages” principle in its design, effectively separating clean, contaminated, and semi-contaminated areas, as well as medical staff passages from patient passages, with independent laboratory and imaging examination systems. Emergency, first aid, and fever clinics are independently zoned for infected, suspected infected, and non-infected patients. These measures not only meet the daily needs of treating infectious disease patients but also strengthen the hospital's ability to operate safely and protect doctors and patients during major epidemics.

Launching the Particle Center to Enhance Cancer Cure Rates in the Region

To do a good job, one must first sharpen one's tools. HeYou Hospital actively allocates advanced medical resources based on the needs of regional residents.

For example, HeYou Hospital plans to build a Particle Center for cancer treatment, with a budget of 2 billion RMB. “Particle technology is one of the most cutting-edge cancer radiotherapy methods currently available. Compared to traditional radiotherapy, particle technology has significant advantages for treating certain tumors, such as shorter treatment courses, less pain, better efficacy, and fewer side effects. However, due to the high complexity of this technology system and the enormous one-time investment cost, there are currently few projects implemented domestically,” stated a relevant person in charge of the HeYou Hospital operations team. Launching the Particle Center will greatly enhance the level of cancer treatment in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and even South China. “Especially tumors like nasopharyngeal carcinoma are within the indications for particle therapy.”

In addition to the Particle Center, HeYou Hospital will also establish a Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) model. This model revolves around the diseased organ or tissue, organizing multidisciplinary clinical consultations to comprehensively evaluate cases, reach a treatment consensus, and jointly provide patients with “one-stop” diagnostic and treatment services. This avoids the drawbacks of the traditional medical model where departments operate independently, ensuring that the treatment plan is more holistic, precise, timely, and efficient.

“Based on the regional disease spectrum and market demand, the hospital will focus on building six Centers of Excellence: Oncology Medicine, Cardiovascular Medicine, Neuroscience, Geriatrics and Rehabilitation Medicine, Bone and Joint and Sports Medicine, and Women's and Children's Medicine,” pointed out a relevant person in charge of HeYou Hospital. The hospital will provide patients with the most effective, least side-effect, and best quality-of-life personalized medical plans based on multidisciplinary discussions and evaluations.

Designing a “Centralized Outpatient Process” So Patients Only Need to Visit Once

In addition to introducing more professional and modern diagnostic and treatment technologies, HeYou Hospital has even higher goals.

HeYou Hospital has clearly stated that upon opening, it will leverage information technology to empower medical services and promote “Smart Services”: The hospital will design a system to achieve real-time data integration for appointment registration sources online and offline, allowing citizens to book appointments anytime, anywhere; appointments will be precise to the minute and equipment, reducing waiting times; settlement channels will be diversified, and the settlement process will be paperless, so patients no longer need to carry various documents and run around queuing; follow-up patients can receive care through the internet hospital. Ultimately, the hospital aims to truly ensure that patients only need to visit once through various innovative means.

Furthermore, HeYou Hospital will combine “Smart Healthcare” with process and spatial design, advocating for a “Centralized Outpatient Diagnosis and Treatment Process.” Patients will wait for consultation, triage, and see the doctor in the outpatient department; payment for examinations, blood draws for lab tests, and ECG exams will be completed quickly within the consultation area; doctors will quickly obtain lab results and examination reports through the hospital information system to make diagnoses and determine treatment plans; patients can simultaneously receive lab and examination information on their mobile phones, achieving a true “patient-centered” approach through intelligence.

While preparatory work is progressing rapidly, Meihe Hospital, a subsidiary of the HeYou International Hospital Project serving as an incubator for the project's operations, is expected to officially open fully by the end of this year.

“Meihe Hospital started with health check-up services two years ago and currently offers three types of services: health check-ups, health management, and specialist outpatient clinics,” revealed a relevant hospital official. Meihe Hospital has also invited a group of renowned experts who have received titles such as “Ping An Good Doctor,” “Lingnan Famous Doctor,” and “Southern Good Doctor” to provide consultations for community residents.

Liu Xiaofang, the Preparatory Dean of HeYou Hospital, introduced that the hospital will take internationalization, digitalization, intelligence, and modernization as its construction directions, creating a highly comfortable medical environment, introducing highly intelligent software, an efficient operation system, and a high-level quality assurance system to enhance operational efficiency. At the same time, the hospital will recruit a team with high self-discipline, high cooperation, and high-level diagnosis and treatment capabilities, providing services with efficient and convenient processes and high-affinity humanistic care to safeguard the health of citizens in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.

A Hospital Full of “Hometown Sentiment” Perfectly Integrates High Standards with Non-Profit Orientation

A dream of building a hospital, long awaited for many years, received full support from the Shunde District, where the HeYou International Hospital Project is located, two years ago. This was not only because it was a multi-billion RMB investment by a local well-known entrepreneur but also because of the hospital's own high-standard, non-profit positioning.

Since He Xiangjian, the founder of Midea and Honorary Chairman of the He Foundation, retired from the Midea Group, he has gradually built a modern, international philanthropic and charitable undertaking system. The HeYou International Hospital Project, whose name signifies “Uprightness and Sincerity, Guardian of Life,” is the latest among them.

Based on the difficulty his fellow townspeople faced in accessing medical care, He Xiangjian conceived the idea of building a hospital six years ago. Although the threshold for building a hospital is high and the difficulty is great, He Xiangjian considered it repeatedly and resolved to overcome all difficulties to benefit his hometown.

In 2019, the Shunde District Party and Government team listed the HeYou International Hospital Project as a key work item, establishing a dedicated team to help solve problems. The project finally moved from paper to reality. In the future, HeYou Hospital will cooperate with other institutions to cover the entire life cycle from birth, treatment, to hospice care, building a medical consortium for a comprehensive health ecosystem.

“All future operating surpluses of HeYou Hospital will only be used for the hospital's own development, medical research, and giving back to society, not for returning to investors,” Liu Xiaofang, the Preparatory Dean of HeYou Hospital, explained the hospital's non-profit nature.

“Healthcare is the most basic need for everyone, so the hospital will also be open to all people, providing high-quality and inclusive services,” Liu Xiaofang stated. In the future, while serving the citizens of Shunde, the hospital also hopes to radiate its services to the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and beyond.
