Neurology & Cardiology Jointly Complete Rare Giant Carotid Artery Aneurysm Embolization Surgery
Recently, a patient was admitted to the hospital due to long-term unexplained headaches and dizziness. Examination revealed a rare giant aneurysm (14mm in diameter) in the internal carotid artery, accompanied by severe coronary artery stenosis. Rupture of the aneurysm would compress the left internal carotid artery, leading to impaired or interrupted blood supply to the left cerebral hemisphere, endangering life and requiring timely treatment. Meanwhile, coronary artery stenosis could trigger sudden myocardial infarction, increasing surgical risks. Therefore, the interventional team led by Liu Aidong from the Department of Neurology and the interventional team led by Su Haiming from the Department of Cardiology urgently collaborated, deciding to perform a combined surgery: first addressing the coronary artery issue, followed by interventional embolization of the internal carotid artery aneurysm.
On January 24, the Cardiology team led by Su Haiming successfully implanted a stent for the patient, completing coronary angioplasty, which effectively improved the patient's cardiac blood supply and laid a solid foundation for the subsequent surgery. Immediately afterward, the Neurology team led by Liu Aidong seamlessly took over, precisely performing external carotid artery interventional embolization, successfully "removing" the giant aneurysm that threatened the patient's life.
On the second day after surgery, the patient recovered well, with complete relief from dizziness symptoms and stable vital signs. The patient was discharged smoothly on January 27.
The success of this surgery represents another perfect demonstration of our hospital's multidisciplinary collaboration model. The strong alliance between the Department of Neurology and the Department of Cardiology broke down disciplinary barriers, achieved complementary advantages, provided the optimal treatment plan for the patient, and accumulated valuable experience for our hospital in the field of complex interventional therapy.
