Giant Hernia the Size of a Volleyball! General Surgery Team Skillfully Relieves Pain

The patient discovered a mass in the left groin area one year ago, initially about the size of a ping-pong ball, without pain or a dragging sensation. The mass gradually enlarged to the size of a volleyball, causing discomfort. Recently, the patient visited the General Surgery Department of our hospital. The attending physician, Director Wang Xiangfei, identified through a pelvic CT scan: a left inguinal hernia (with omental fat as the content) and left hydrocele of the tunica vaginalis.

Due to the large size of the hernia, the difficulty of minimally invasive surgery increased accordingly. On January 23rd, after meticulous preoperative preparation and ruling out surgical contraindications, Director Wang and the team performed a laparoscopic transabdominal preperitoneal (TAPP) left inguinal hernia repair with mesh for the patient. During the procedure, Director Wang performed precise dissection and careful manipulation to avoid injury to adjacent organs. The mesh was placed flat, and the peritoneum was sutured completely. The surgery relieved the patient's pain in just one hour. The patient was discharged two days later.

Minimally invasive surgery not only significantly reduces operative time and hospital stay but also lowers the recurrence rate. Furthermore, the General Surgery team thoughtfully considered cosmetic outcomes for the patient: the postoperative incisions are small and located in concealed areas such as the umbilicus, making them easy to conceal and generally leaving no obvious scars.
